Anglofili

Læste en anmeldelse af genudgivelsen af den gamle koldkriger Robert Conquests klassikere ‘The Great Terror: Stalin’s Purge of the Thirties’ (1968) og ‘The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivisation and the Terror-Famine’ (1986).

Det var i sig selv interessant læsning, men endnu vigtigere; anmeldelsen mindede mig om hvorfor at jeg (Brexit eller ej) antageligvis altid vil forblive håbløst anglofil.

Satire and light verse were among Conquest’s strengths as a poet. He also wrote science fiction, co-operating with Kingsley Amis on five anthologies of new sci-fi writing in the 1960s as well as publishing his own sci-fi novel, A World of Difference (1955), and was a lifelong member of the British Interplanetary Society.

I hvilke andre lande end dybt excentriske Storbritanien kan man i ramme alvor forestille sig, at nogen danner et interplanetarisk selskab? Som lobbyer for mere udforskning af rummet? Det er jo helt og aldeles vidunderligt. Og foreningen findes i øvrigt stadig.
